Life in Squares是一套BBC的迷你劇, 劇情主要集中在Bloomsburg Group的核心成員- Virginia Woolf (年輕V的扮演者 Lydia Leonard, 上年紀的扮演者為Catherine McCormack) 和Vanessa Bell(Phoebe Fox, Eva Best)的一生
坦白說, 我是看著該劇打著Virginia Woolf的名字才看的.

Virginia Woolf是我其中一位最喜愛的作家 (出於多個原因, 排第一的大概永遠也是Jack Kerouac). Mrs Dolloway和The Waves 是我最喜歡她的作品.

所以當我看見有部電視劇是關於Virginia的生平, 還要是BBC拍攝的 (眾所周知, BBC拍古裝劇真係有一手咖啦). Life in Squares便馬上出現在我腦中看劇的Most Wanting List上.

在我看了第一集後, 我便意識到此劇真正戲份最多的核心人物, 其實是Virginia的姐姐Vanessa.

劇中著墨最多的是她們兩姐姐複雜又親密的關係和Vanessa 的感情生活.
Virginia 的小說以其意識流和滲透著女權主義和同性戀傾向而見稱. 該劇也有嘗試探討Virginia 在該方面的傾向.

Virginia 雖然才華橫溢但同時卻體弱多病, 在父親死後更出現起幻覺來使她第一次嘗試自殺.

Vanessa 作為家中最大的孩子, 在母親離世後便擔起好好維持家庭運作的責任, 同時也費不少心力照顧妹妹. 但姐妹二人也渴望自由.因此, 她們曾有永遠不結婚的念頭.

當Vanessa告知Virginia, Clive (未來丈夫) 向她求婚時, Virginia 反應立刻大得嚇人,表示若果Nessa要結婚的話對象只能夠是自己.

這番說話的意思究竟是妹妹不捨得姐姐嫁出去當別人的妻子之悔氣說話, 還是流露出Virginia 對Nessa有著超越單純姐妹情的曖昧之情? It all depends on you how to take it啦.
一直以來, 我也有聽聞過Bloomsburg Group圈子裡的人物關係很混亂. 但到我看過此劇後和上網做做資料搜集後, 我才知道這不是一個傳聞.

若果Gossip Girl中的人物關係已經混亂得使你頭大, 我可以告訴你, GG的人物關係與Bloomsburg Group相比, 還是差了一大截.

Nessa在第一次世界大戰時, 早已跟丈夫Clive (Andrew Havill)貌合神離. 一向誠實面對自己感情又響往自由的Nessa跟丈夫已是Open Marriage的關係. 大家在外面各自有情人.

到後來, Nessa愛上了同樣是Bloomsburg Group一份子的畫家 Duncan Grant (James Norton, Rupert Penry- Jones). Duncan是一位同性戀者, 卻跟Nessa 生了一個女兒Angelica, 而Nessa的丈夫Clive知道Angelica 非他所出但仍然樂於讓Angelica使用他的姓氏Bell, 更對她視如己出.
好吧, 你已經感到後混亂了吧?
但更混亂的繼續來

在Angelica 出生時, 為她接生的David Garnett (此人為雙性戀, 當時乃是Duncan 的情人)在她長大後竟然與她相戀, 結合及育有小孩. 後來, Angelica 和David離婚後, 她又愛上了另一個畫家- George Bergen (而George 也曾為Duncan 的戀人)

好, 現在你應該消化不來他們之間的關係.感到想暈.

Freedom, 是Virginia 和Nessa畢生追求的東西. Nessa 表示過雖然日子難過,但至少是她的選擇.
所以, 關於她的私生活, We're who to judge?

我只知道Bloomburg Group這群人, 每個也是才華橫溢的人. 單單是Virginia Woolf一個, 成就已撐起半邊天.所以關於他們的感情生活, 我沒有意見. 我唯一可以說的是可能有才之士們天生多情吧!
與Nessa 豐富的感情生活相反, Virginia 卻是簡單得多. 她與丈夫一直相愛至Virginia 選擇穿著那件裝滿了石頭的睡袍走進河流結束自己的生命. (我很喜歡的英倫樂隊Florence and the machine的歌曲What the water gave me 也是關於Virginia 自殺的故事)

Virginia畢生受到抑鬱症的困擾, 最後受不了各種幻覺與痛症的煎熬, 走上了自殺之路, 臨終前, 留下了一封遺書.

Dearest,

I feel certain that I am going mad again. I feel we can't go through another of those terrible times. And I shan't recover this time. I begin to hear voices, and I can't concentrate. So I am doing what seems the best thing to do. You have given me the greatest possible happiness. You have been in every way all that anyone could be. I don't think two people could have been happier till this terrible disease came. I can't fight any longer. I know that I am spoiling your life, that without me you could work. And you will I know. You see I can't even write this properly. I can't read. What I want to say is I owe all the happiness of my life to you. You have been entirely patient with me and incredibly good. I want to say that — everybody knows it. If anybody could have saved me it would have been you. Everything has gone from me but the certainty of your goodness. I can't go on spoiling your life any longer.
I don't think two people could have been happier than we have been.

從字裡行間中你可以感受到Virginia 的痛苦和絕望.
那一句, I can't fight any longer. 我能深深感受到Virginia 的無力感.希望以了結自己的生命去解脫自己的痛苦和丈夫的痛苦.

好, 到這裡. 我深知此篇文章是關於Vanessa 和Virginia 的生平多過Life in Squares的劇評.
沒有辦法, 我太喜歡Virginia Woolf!

關於Life in Squares, 我也深明她不是那種大人細路都鍾意的古裝劇, 也沒有那種睇完有" 嘩!好勁!好好睇呀"感覺的電視劇,但我誠意推薦給喜歡或者對Virginia Woolf和Bloomburg Group有興趣的朋友看看.
P.S. 關於此劇, 我有一點真的難以理解. 為什麼有些角色要找不同演員扮演年輕和上了年紀, 但有些卻只花老裝呢? 令我有一頭霧水了一會兒! I just don' get it!
